3 Screen grabs – Interactive Web 2.0 Examples

A few websites that are considered as web 2.0 are Flicker, Pinterest and Youtube. These websites became successful because it allows the users to interact with other people and the website.

  • Flickr – Flickr is built mainly for photographers to post their images. this website allows users to submit their photographs, comment and rate fellow photographers piece of work as well.
  • Screen Shot 2014-03-04 at 7.39.22 pmPinterest – Pinterest is basically like a pin board where users can pin things and ideas to share with other users. Other people can view pinned stuff through the different categories and might help them get or start any idea.
  • Screen Shot 2014-03-04 at 7.38.32 pmYoutube – Youtube is a website where users post videos and expose it to the world, if you are lucky your video can become viral and can get a lot of subscribers. This website became successful not only because they can share any videos online but when you reach a certain amount of subscribers you then become a Youtube partner which allows you to earn cash every time someone views your video.Screen Shot 2014-03-04 at 7.38.41 pm

(Week One) Web 2.0 and Convergence

(Summary) – Week One

What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is the change in the media scene, which joins the field of design and communication.  Web 2.0 is not a technology; it’s a way of designing software and businesses. It is a collaborative or read-write format. It is a new generation of websites, which gathers the contribution, creativity, and cooperation of the users.

Mark Thompson, BBC Director quoted “will be fundamentally disruptive, and the foundations on which much of traditional media is built may be swept away entirely… any creative strategies unless it takes account of these revolutionary and accelerating changes both in technology and in audience expectation.”

Did you know that it took Radio 38 years to get a market of 50 million people; T.V. took 13 years; Internet in just 4 years; iPod took in 3 years time and the iPhone only took 1.5 years?

User participation – Consumer generated content swamping, disrupting traditional media:

  • 900,000 blog posts everyday
  • 100,000 videos uploaded everyday
  • Millions of “gestures” (search, clicks, tagging) per day

What does this mean for future designers?

If you’re a designer you must:

  • Understand a greater number of context for your work and become more flexible engaging with those context
  • Think about the publishing and developing the engagement with audiences participating with your publication
  • No longer make a static website but fluid design which can be used in different platforms.

What is Convergent Media?

Convergent media is a cross over between communications networks, Content (media) & Computing/Information Technology.

  • Physical layer – network through which communications devices are connected to one another.
  • Code layer – code or software that operates communications hardware devices – including protocols
  • Content layer – content that is delivered through the communications infrastructure

Reflection

After listening to week one lecture I have realized that technology and design methods are becoming outdated in roughly around six months. Designers need to learn new tricks and think of new great ideas and techniques to keep up. I also learnt that Web 2.0 became successful because it is a collaboration of designers and users instead of just the designers effort.
